Based on the Sunshine Coast in Australia, we are registered BAS Agents, providing bookkeeping, BAS and business management services to small businesses focused on growth, profitability and leveraging technology. We own a number of businesses ourselves, all of which can be run remotely. We love to travel and have structured our businesses around this passion. We refer to ourselves Business Nomads and love working with other Business Nomads, and business owners who aspire to become nomads, like us.

    Bookkeeper vs accountant. What is the difference? You probably refer to your bookkeeper as your accountant, however, the two are very different.

    Your businesses requires accurate and timely accounting information so you can make informed business decisions. This information is prepared and documented by bookkeepers FOR accountants.

    Your bookkeeper will focus on daily/weekly/monthly accounting tasks, providing information, but usually not opinions.

    The accountant will oversee the work performed by the bookkeeper and will provide you with analysis and interpretation of the information generated by the bookkeeper.

    You bookkeeper will work closely with you, often interacting with you or your staff daily. This provides your bookkeepers with a unique insight into your business, making them a key business advisor for most businesses. On the other hand, an external accountant may only interact with your business once or twice during the year (usually at tax time). They may not know the business as intimately as the person maintaining your books.

    Xero accounting software is ideal for small businesses with employees, basic inventory, payroll or more complex accounting needs. The cost for most small business is only $50 per Xero Accounting Softwaremonth. Additionally, because the system is cloud-based it can be linked to other software that you may already be using, such as Survey Monkey, Square, Stripe, Hubspot, Google G Suite, Gmail, Autoentry, Woo Commerce, WordPress and many others.

    We are often asked what is the best free accounting software in Australia. Unfortunately, for most businesses free accounting software can end up being very expensive.

    For a handful of clients we have use Wave, which is a free Canadian accounting package. We have found that for most businesses it is not adequate, as it does not handle Australian GST very well, BAS returns need to be completed manually and it does not deal with superannuation at all. We also found the level of support when things went wrong to be non-existent. Not getting support when you need it can cost your business dearly. It is for this reason that we have moved away from Wave.

    Your business software really is the core of your business and like most things, you do get what you pay for. While not free, we recommend and use Xero for most businesses that we work with. We can provide Xero for as little as $5 per month to regular clients, depending on their requirements.
